MDH Guidelines for the Holidays

MDH Update on Face Coverings

Recently MDH updated their guidance on Face Coverings. Here is a reminder on the face covering guidance, including the updates. The main update is the recommendation that all face coverings should be two layers of fabric. Single-layer fabric, usually found in certain types of scarves, neck gaiters or bandannas, may not be as effective.

Types of allowable face coverings include:
  • paper or disposable mask
  • cloth face mask
  • neck gaiter
  • scarf
  • bandanna
  • religious face covering
Face coverings should cover the nose and mouth completely, not be overly tight/restrictive, and feel comfortable. Face coverings are not meant to substitute for social distancing.

Tips for Self-Motivation

Amy Riedel, our Youth Service Bureau Counselor, shares some helpful tips to encourage self-motivation in children.

How Do Kids Become More Self-Motivated?

Autonomy. Plain and simple.

How do we support kids in developing a healthy sense of control and autonomy?

So much of it comes back to us, as healthy adults and role models, being willing to give up some control. We must realize that it is not our job to fix our kids’ problems, but instead, give them skills to learn how to solve their own problems, and give grace when they make mistakes.   We want to help them to feel empowered to make choices that are meaningful for them. Stress is contagious, so another important thing we can do is manage our own stress and anxiety, especially around students.
